California State Library’s COMPASS program offers resources for summer
From the California State Library:
COMPASS Highlights for Summer Reading
As the school year wraps up and summer draws near, we’re highlighting COMPASS resources and related programs to benefit students, teachers, public library staff, families and all lifelong learners.
Note that some of these links will require authentication within educational or library online systems. Tips if Alexander Street links require authentication:If you are working off campus or outside a local library and authenticating into the Alexander Street resource using institution username/passcode or local library authentication, log into the resource first and then do a keyword search to find the title or collection. And a quick reminder that the PBS collection from Alexander Street can only be authenticated by public schools and districts.
- Beginner readers can practice while learning about summer with PebbleGo Science articles about Summer Weather, Animals, People andPlants. Use Capstone’s activities in the classroom, at home, or to support summer library programming. (All PebbleGo articles include their own related unique activity!) See more resources on Capstone’s California home page.
- Use TeachingBooks to enhance summer reading activities with resources curated to engage readers and connect them to the books and programs enjoyed in your community. Check out resources for summer reading programs, Sora Sweet Reads, and building customized summer reading lists.
- Explore the world from home or the library with Britannica’s World Geography Explorer featuring interactive maps, games, and activities to enhance understanding of continents, countries, regions, and landmarks. More ideas for fun summer learning from Britannica.
- Arthur episode: The Last Day can help younger kids navigate the mixed feelings that come with the end of the school year, and how spending the summer away from classmates might affect their friendships. This is one of many selections available on Alexander Street’s PBS Collection for public schools.
- Host a screening of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Bond/360 producer) from award-winning director Julie Taymor (The Lion King on Broadway, Frida, Titus), featured in Alexander Street’s Theatre in Video collection. (Tip: authenticate into Alexander Street first, then click link or search within the specific collection Theatre in Video collection.)
Happy Summer from COMPASS!
