This week’s Book Flood Podcast guest is Dr. Bob Nelson. He is an advocate for literacy, books, and libraries. While serving as superintendent at Fresno Unified School District, he recorded books on video for students during COVID. In addition, Nelson, along with the Board of Trustees, have distributed over 1,000,000 books to Fresno Unified students in the support of reading.

Nelson is the former superintendent of Fresno Unified School District (7.5 years) and Chawanakee Unified School District (3 years). Nelson was appointed to the position of Superintendent of Fresno Unified School District in September 2017, launching a new era of student progress.

Nelson graduated from the University of Southern California (USC), completed his Master’s in Educational Administration and Supervision at Fresno State and then received his doctoral degree at USC. He has spent most of his career directly impacting Fresno Unified, starting as a teacher in 1991 at Burroughs Elementary School. Bob is the first internal employee to serve as Fresno Unified Superintendent in 30 years.

In the fall of 2024, Dr. Nelson transitioned to an assistant professorship in Educational Leadership at Fresno State University. In addition, he has a podcast, #Militant Positivity, where he and his guests look at education in California’s Central Valley.

“California outlaws the banning of LGBTQ books from public library shelves”

Published

From the Bay Area Reporter:

“California’s public libraries will no longer be able to pull books off the shelves because they talk about race or sexual orientation. And those receiving state funding will now be required to have a written policy governing how they add titles and remove titles from their collections.

It is due to Governor Gavin Newsom signing into law on Sunday Assembly Bill 1825 by Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance). Known as the California Freedom to Read Act, the legislation takes effect January 1 and does not apply to libraries at public schools.”
