2024 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award presented to Dare Coulter for “An American Story”

Dare Coulter has received the 2024 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award. This award is given to the most outstanding illustration of a book by an African American artist. The book, “An American Story,” was written by famed author Kwame Alexander. Dare Coulter is on TeachingBooks here and Kwame Alexander is on TeachingBooks here. This award is presented by the American Library Association.

In addition to Coulter’s win, three books were awarded Honor Book status for their illustrators:

  • “Big” (Vashti Harrison, Illustrator)
  • “Holding Her Own: The Exceptional Life of Jackie Ormes” (Shannon Wright, Illustrator)
  • “There was a Party for Langston” (Jerome Humphrey & Jarret Humphrey)
