The California State Library serves the people of California in several ways and is made up of the Administrative Services Bureau, the California Research Bureau, State Library Services, the Information Technology Bureau and Library Development Services.

The California State Library collects, preserves, generates and disseminates information ranging from California’s priceless historical items to today’s online texts, and it advises, consults with, and provides technical assistance to California’s public libraries, all while directing state and federal funds to support local public libraries and statewide library programs, and services.
The State Library is home to public reading rooms including Information Services, Government Publications, the Law Library, the Braille and Talking Book Library, and the California History Room. It also plays host to Night at the State Library, annual community events like Juneteenth, the Archives Crawl, Museum Day and exhibits you won’t find anywhere else!

Sitting on the edge of the Pacific Ocean and on a vibrant CSU campus, the Sutro Library holds the remaining materials from Adolph Sutro’s historic collection of rare books and manuscripts. Our collections span all time periods and all regions of the globe with particular strengths in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Yemenite Hebraica, English social history, and one of the most comprehensive collections on the Mexican Republic in the world.
Although not part of the original Adolph Sutro collection, there is large genealogy collection which is one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S.
