Librarians Should Teach Students about Voting

With the upcoming presidential election in November, it is incumbent upon librarians and teachers to use this “teachable moment” to underscore the importance of voting.

Teaching civic education to students is essential for several key reasons:

  1. Empowerment: It empowers students with knowledge about their rights and responsibilities, helping them understand how they can influence their communities and government.
  2. Critical Thinking: Civic education encourages critical thinking and discussion about societal issues, enabling students to analyze various viewpoints and make informed decisions.
  3. Engagement: It fosters civic engagement by motivating students to participate in community service, advocacy, and, eventually, voting, cultivating a habit of active citizenship.
  4. Understanding Democracy: Students learn about democratic principles, the importance of the rule of law, and the functions of government, which helps them appreciate the system in which they live.
  5. Promoting Tolerance: Civic education emphasizes respect for diverse opinions and backgrounds, fostering a culture of inclusivity and understanding.
  6. Long-Term Civic Involvement: Educating students about civic responsibilities prepares them to be active participants in democracy throughout their lives, leading to a more informed and engaged citizenry.

Overall, civic education is vital for developing responsible, knowledgeable, and engaged citizens who can contribute positively to society.
