LIBRARIAN

Overall Responsibilities

Provide general management of the library media center at the assigned site(s).

Specific Responsibilities

1. Provide students and staff with access to information and information services that support instructional activities and appropriate recreational use.

2. Work directly with students and staff individually, in small groups, and in large groups to provide such activities as: orientation to the library resources, strategies for research in assigned areas, and information access in areas of personal interest.

3. Oversee the activities of the Library Media Technicians working with the assigned administrator to ensure their effective evaluation.

4. Conduct activities needed to assure efficient operation of the library related to purchasing, inventory control, hours of service, coordination with other school activities, and others as appropriate.

5. Provide current information about trends in related areas such as technology, information control, censorship, and others.

6. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Specific knowledge of:

1. Management of information resources.

2. Laws, policies, and procedures applicable to the use of and access to information.

3. External resources that can assist by providing information, suggestions, and solutions to problems.

Specific Ability to:

1. Work directly with students and staff in developing age and subject, appropriate knowledge and skills.

2. Maintain patience when confronted with challenges and stressful situations.

3. Contribute to successful fulfillment of the District Mission.

4. Provide support that enables teachers to better fulfill the District Mission.

5. Communicate clearly to diverse audiences: providing routine transfer of information, assisting others in need, resolving conflicts under stress, and other activities as required.

6. Conduct responsibilities of the position based on information and instructions provided in English.

7. Learn and appropriately apply District policies and procedures and other regulations related to the position.

8. Maintain appropriate confidentiality about the status of students, staff, classroom, school , and district activities.

9. Operate calculator, computer and data entry terminals.

10. Learn and apply current technology to assigned duties.

Education:

1. Bachelor’s degree.

2. Graduate study in library science.

Experience:

1. Three years as a classroom or support teacher.

License:

1. California credential authorizing service as a teacher or librarian.

2. Valid California Driver’s License

4. Facility to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.

5. Facility to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations and on the telephone.

6. Facility to see, read, and distinguish colors, with or without vision aids: computer screens, equipment used in the work environment, instructional materials, training materials, directions, rules, policies, calendars, agendas, manuals, and other printed matter.

7. Physical strength and agility to push, pull, squat, twist, turn, and lift and carry bulky objects of up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.

8. Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in a safe, accurate, neat, and timely fashion and to make and evaluate the results of judgments and decisions.

9. Facility to drive a car.

10. High tolerance for continuing, stressful situations.
